Why Marching Band Championship Rings Are So Unique
As fun as it is to design a ring for a state championship football team, the marching band at halftime might have them beat. In my experience, few rings are more creative and challenging than those for a marching band that excels at putting on a one-of-a-kind musical show.
For example, a high school football team wins its state championship, and with jersey numbers, positions, a ball, a goalpost, and a trophy, there are foundational elements to start from. A band wins their competition, and the director says, “We need a custom championship ring that touches on the theme of ‘Eleanor Rigby’ by The Beatles.” A ring honoring a classic song about a lonely woman does not come with many starting points!
Amazingly enough, we created a powerful marching band championship ring for South Jones High School to honor their state championship and the theme of “Eleanor Rigby.” The head of the ring was anchored by the school mascot and called out their victory as state champions. Then, to personalize the ring, they included band member names, the fact they won five straight years, and a clever graphic nod to a park bench, a lamppost, and the title, “Eleanor Rigby.”
The South Jones High School ring is sweet, powerful, and exemplifies the unique nature of a marching band ring. That said, from the size of the order to thematic elements, schools face many considerations and decisions when going behind the music to design their perfect band championship ring.
Tooting Their Own Horn: How Bands Celebrate Their Championships
Whether it’s baseball, football, soccer, cheerleading, or band, all teams celebrate the same way. They rally together as a group and win a title. They earn a stunning ring that helps them forever cherish the victory.
Like a traditional sport, marching band members begin their work in the summer, attending a camp. Then, there are constant practices, learning a routine, and perfecting a performance.
They share a glimpse of a performance during the halftime of nightly football games, but they save the main show for competitions.
High school and college bands compete for state and national titles, and in college, there’s also the coveted ESPN Band of the Year honor. Band directors or assistant band directors tend to lead the ring process, and it’s always important to have a designated person in charge of the ring to work directly with a Signature Championship Rings client guide.
Together, the client guide can help band leaders effectively showcase a theme, pick appropriate stones, and get the ring ordered right away. Oftentimes, marching band rings are quick orders that happen early in a school year, and the band wants to celebrate their championship while still riding that excitement all year long.
Composing a Ring: What to Consider When Designing Marching Band Championship Rings
To begin the ring process, there are always a few starter questions a person in charge of the ring design can ask themselves. It’s an exercise to help identify the most meaningful story to tell.
Additional unique considerations for a marching band ring include:
- Order size — Honestly, some of the largest and smallest orders that Signature Championship Rings has processed have been for marching bands. A school can have 20 to 200 members of a band, and then there are band directors, assistants, and volunteers. To go with a ring, pendants are also often ordered to provide donors, parents, and supporting family and friends. The size of the order is important to wrangle before identifying all the creative elements to include in a ring, as it may impact the overall budget.
- Graphics and visuals — In band, the school may have a graphic that it has already created to support the show or annual routine. That graphic, if not too detailed, can be a place to start for what to include on a ring. Otherwise, the graphic could influence ideas such as colors to include or types of accompanying images that help tell the story. Signature can start from any graphic, so possibilities are endless. A client guide will direct you on how that graphic best translates into a ring design.
- Words and lyrics — Show themes based on songs or styles of music can lead to fun lyrics or ways to make a ring feel special. Particularly for bands that win many rings, like South Jones High School winning five-straight titles, highlighting the lyrics and show theme makes each win memorable in its own way.
- Personal touch — Custom, personalized rings for each band member can be done in many ways. Unlike putting a jersey number on a ring, the member’s instrument can be listed on a ring or demonstrated through an image. The band member’s name can also Be engraved on the ring.
Making the Band Ring: Best-in-Class Examples of Custom Marching Band Rings We’ve Created
While the possibilities are almost endless when it comes to marching band championship rings, it helps to review some stalwart examples. Here are a few rings with perfect pitch:
- Florida A&M and Miles College— Both schools won ESPN’s Band of the Year honor in 2024, and the rings dazzle with detail. Florida A&M utilized a bed of white diamonds to provide a clean base for the school colors to pop from. The ring screamed the top honor of ESPN Band of the Year, plus honored its 100-year history of marching excellence. Truly remarkable is a dramatic image of a dancing band member, part of the ESPN Band of the Year logo, on one side, along with the band member’s last name. Miles College also leveraged the logo and highlighted its decades-long traditions with an incredibly detailed graphic recreated on the head of the ring. The image showcases how detailed these rings can get.
- Sparkman High School — Receiving a state championship ring, the Sparkman High School band created a ring that celebrated their show’s Irish folk song theme. The words, “The Pipes Are Calling,” were inscribed around the ring, and the theme was further supported by images of an organ and a bagpipe band. School colors and the member’s name were included, too.
- Oak Grove High School — Another high school state championship ring, Oak Grove High School created a clean ring with school colors, the player’s instrument and name, and an image of the state trophy. But, almost like hidden messages just for the band member to appreciate, the ring includes subtle details of the show with checkered flags and the words, “A Fast Machine,” referring to the title of their show, and the final winning score of their performance.

How do schools choose the design elements for a marching band ring?
Band directors typically work with a client guide to incorporate show themes, colors, graphics, lyrics, and personal touches. Designs often start with visuals or artwork already created for the band’s performance, ensuring every ring reflects the year’s unique show.
Who usually oversees the ordering of marching band championship rings?
Most often, the band director or assistant band director manages the ring process. They collaborate with a Signature Championship Rings client guide to finalize the design, determine order size, choose personalization options, and ensure the rings arrive in time for celebrations.
