Riggs High School in Pierre, South Dakota, led by Head Coach Steve Steele, exemplifies this truth. Under Steele’s leadership, the Governors have built a dynasty, earning their seventh consecutive state championship in 2023. But as Steele often reminds his team, success is never “copy-paste.”

Adapting to the Team

Each season brings a unique group of players with their own strengths, challenges, and personalities. “Every single group of kids, every single mixture of them, is different,” Steele explains. “The same motivations won’t work year after year.”

Steele and his staff dedicate their offseason to understanding their roster, identifying leaders, and creating strategies tailored to that year’s team dynamic. For 2023, their rallying cry was “Become the Mountain” – a theme emphasizing their pursuit of unmatched excellence. The team embraced this with physical practices and a determined mindset, pushing together to achieve their seventh straight title, a record in South Dakota.

Core Values: TOTD and FAMILY

While the team’s personality shifts annually, the program’s core values remain constant:

FAMILY (Forget About Me, I Love You): This mantra focuses on selflessness and servant leadership. Steele encourages players and coaches to embrace their roles and support each other, fostering a player-led culture.

TOTD (Turn Off the Dark): A tool to overcome adversity, TOTD reminds players to focus on positivity and resilience. Steele credits this mindset for helping his team rally during challenging moments, including coming back from multiple deficits in a state championship game.
